Palm oil mills

Biogas and green fuels for palm oil mills

Your mill already produces the feedstock. We help you get more gas from it and turn that gas into a product you can sell.

What your waste can become

Your feedstock. Your opportunity.

POME and empty fruit bunches can be digested into biogas. Biogas can drive a generator, or be cleaned and upgraded into biomethane for Bio-CNG or bio-methanol. Digestate can be returned to the estate as organic fertiliser.

Palm oil mill process routes

From mill residues to useful energy.

A route overview. The selected process and equipment depend on feedstock and product specifications.

  1. Feed preparation

    POME & EFB

POME treatment, with EFB preparation where co-digestion is selected.

    Review the feedstock
  2. Anaerobic digestion

    CSTR Plus / SDAR

Convert the organic load into biogas. Match reactor selection to the feed.

  3. Gas conditioning

    Biogas purification

Remove hydrogen sulfide and manage moisture and other relevant contaminants.

    Explore desulfurization

Select the downstream energy route

Power & heat

Conditioned biogas can supply suitably specified energy equipment.

Biomethane → Bio-CNG / Bio-LNG

Membrane upgrading followed by compression or project-specific liquefaction integration.

Explore renewable gas

Green methanol

Gas preparation, reforming, synthesis and refining connect the gas supply with a liquid-fuel route.

Explore methanol skids

Digestate handling and downstream wastewater treatment are designed alongside the selected energy route.

Already running a covered lagoon? Our desulfurization, membrane and CNG skids can be added to an existing biogas plant.

POME + EFB co-digestion

Add EFB, get more gas

SDAR digests POME together with EFB or fibre at 10–20% solids. Biogas production rises by more than 30%, and methane content increases over time to above 60%.

Fuel logistics

Far from a pipeline? Move the fuel.

Pipelines reach only some mills. Our CNG and bio-methanol skids let a mill produce fuel where the biogas is and move it by truck.

Water treatment

Meet discharge requirements too

Digester effluent can be polished with our nitrogen-removal and clarification technologies, so gas production and discharge compliance are handled by one team.

Project partnership

How we can work with your mill

In a joint venture, the mill provides POME, EFB, space and process water. BIOZOOM provides the process technology and the EPCC, produces CNG and organic fertiliser, manages operations and sells the CNG.

Questions from mills

Plan your next step.

How much biogas can a CSTR Plus produce from POME?

Design data is above 35 m³ of biogas per m³ of POME, with methane above 60%. Your actual yield depends on your POME; send us your flow and COD for an estimate.

What happens to the sludge?

CSTR Plus discharges sludge continuously, so it does not build up in the digester.

Can you work with our existing lagoon?

Yes. Desulfurization, membrane upgrading and CNG skids can be added downstream of an existing biogas plant.

Who owns the plant?

It depends on the model: you own it under EPC or a process package; it is shared in a joint venture.
